Unfortunately, trees grow a lot quicker in New Zealand’s conditions and therefore are not quite as stable as their counterparts in the northern hemisphere. Also, I come across large trees which have had their roots disturbed by digging trenches for foundations and putting driveways in. Urban spread and in filling of residential houses ultimately has major effects on the health of large trees.

Also, concreting near trees where their roots have been cut, can cause issues with the tree health where the lime from the cement leaches into the soil and contaminates the area that the tree needs to draw it nutrients from.
As Arborists we can advise people on the potential risk of having a large tree, whether it is in decline, showing signs of decline, or completely healthy. It may be that the tree is located close to a house, or over the road or powerlines. Some large trees can weigh up to 10 tonne and will cause significant damage if they fail.

Sometimes we suggest that removing some weight from the tree can lessen the chance of the tree failing. Also, certain trees are more susceptible to failing than others, for example a tall single leaded Redwood or Poplar can be a lot stronger than a multiple branched Liquid Amber.
