Coming Out of Winter – Prepare for Spring Now
As we near the end of winter, it’s time to start thinking ahead. Your trees may have quietly endured harsh winds, heavy rain, and freezing temperatures – all of which can weaken limbs, saturate root zones, or mask hidden structural issues.
Winter is a great time to assess damage before the busy spring season hits. Getting a professional tree check now means you’ll be ahead of potential risks – and first in line for pruning, removals, or planting come spring.
A small investment in winter tree care now can save big in the months ahead – in safety, appearance, and long-term health.
Backing Local Talent: Kelly Carline
We’re proud to sponsor and support local talent like Kelly Carline. Originally from Levin and now based in Whanganui, Kelly juggles her role as a Case Manager at Whanganui Prison with her passion for hockey.
This year, Kelly has been named in the Manawatu Women’s Hockey Team for the National Hockey Championship. Her journey hasn’t been without challenges – after a blood clot in her leg forced her to take four months off over summer, she used the time to focus on her fitness in other ways.
The hard work is paying off. Last Sunday, the Manawatu Women’s team kicked off their preparation with a practice game against Wellington, coming away with a 5–0 win!
The National Championship will be held in Christchurch from 14–20 September. After finishing fourth last year, the team is aiming to bring home a medal this season. Kelly’s personal goal following the tournament is to secure a place in the Premier Hockey League Central Falcons team.
We’re excited to cheer Kelly on as she works towards her goals and proud to be part of her journey.
Neighbours & Trees: Finding Common Ground
When neighbours go to war, it’s often over trees.
We’ve seen it all – verbal spats, court cases, and everything in between. Trees grow without caring about boundaries, they block views, drop debris, and tangle with gutters. But often, they’ve been there longer than the people arguing about them.
Here’s what you need to know:
- You can trim encroaching branches, but only if it doesn’t harm the tree.
- Start with a conversation – most tree disputes are best solved by talking, not lawyers.
- Shared-cost solutions are often the most fair.
If needed, we’re happy to help as a neutral voice – offering advice and mediation.
Head Beaver Hangs Up the Harness
It’s the end of an era — and the start of a new chapter.
After more than 20 years leading from the top of the canopy, Bryce has officially hung up his harness. Starting as a young 19-year-old with a saw and a big vision, he’s helped shape not just trees, but teams, communities, and other businesses.
Bryce has climbed hundreds of trees, tackled storms, mentored dozens of team members, and been the calm voice in many a high-stakes removal. While he’s now stepping away from physical tree work, he’ll remain a big part of the Beaver Trees story.
You’ll still see him around – quoting jobs, sharing advice, and guiding the next generation of Beavers as they grow.
He’ll still be entrenched in Beaver Trees – quoting, offering expert advice & motivation, and supporting our management team behind the scenes. You might even catch him popping in for a yarn with long-time clients, staying connected to the people and community that have always been at the heart of Beaver Trees.
His passion for quality, safety, and doing the right thing will always be rooted in everything we do.
From the whole team thank you, Bryce. You’ve built something truly special.
Rogue Tree Cutters – A Real Risk
Across NZ, we’re seeing an uptick in door-knocking, unqualified tree workers (often using intimidation or scare tactics). These rogue operators:
Lack insurance, training, or proper gear
Pressure homeowners for cash payments
Leave dangerous or substandard work behind
Protect yourself by looking for:
Branded vehicles & uniforms
Proper PPE (steel-cap boots, chainsaw pants, helmets)
Scheduled quotes – not surprise door knocks
If something feels off, trust your gut. Call us if you’re ever unsure, we’re here to keep your trees and your peace of mind safe.

Winter Tree Care Tips – Keep Your Property Safe & Tidy
Cold weather can be tough on your trees, but it’s also the perfect time to take care of them. Here’s how to help them through:
- ✂️ Prune deciduous trees – With the leaves off, structural issues are easier to spot. Removing dead or unstable branches now reduces hazards during spring growth or storms.
- 🌧 Watch for root rot – Winter’s wet soil can cause roots to suffocate or decay. Adding mulch around the base (not up the trunk) can regulate moisture and protect against temperature swings.
- 📅 Plan ahead – Spring bookings fill fast. If you’re thinking of planting new trees, managing overgrown hedges, or removing unstable trees, now’s the time to get on our calendar.
