Winter Whirlwind: Emergency Tree Removal in Action!

In July, our Christchurch team received an urgent call from a local school that had been affected by a severe storm. A large oak tree had uprooted and was going to fall over! Arborist Sam P and his team, Hunter, Harry and Sam T rushed on-site, fully equipped and with the necessary tools and safety gear to get the job done quickly and efficiently.

They managed to clear the damaged tree and debris, reducing any further risks and damage, once again creating a safe learning environment for the school. Our team’s dedication and expertise not only established a swift resolution to the immediate issue at hand but also provided peace of mind to the affected residents and students.

Don’t forget in case of emergency, we also have an emergency phone for situations like this one! If you have an emergency outside of regular business hours or on weekends, dial 0800 423 283 and press option 1. For assistance during business hours, call the same number and follow the prompts to connect with your local branch.

(Avoid) Burning Down the House!

Let’s face it, wildfires are a real concern here in New Zealand. But did you know that you can give your home an extra layer of protection just by choosing the right plants for your garden? Yep, it’s true! Think of fire like a picky eater—it has it’s favourite foods! By swapping out highly flammable plants for those with lower flammability, you’re essentially giving the fire less to snack on.

This simple switch can help create a safe zone around your home, giving those pesky heat and embers a tougher time. Plus, low flammability plants aren’t just good for your backyard; they’re great for breaking up flammable landscapes, creating buffer zones near urban areas, and reducing fire risks around your property.

Native beauties like Five Finger, Kawakawa and Lancewood are not just stunning to look at—they’re also less likely to catch fire compared to some other plants.

And the best part? These native plants are super low-maintenance and perfect for our Kiwi climate. They’re tough, drought-resistant, and attract all the local birds and bees. So, you’ll be doing your bit for the environment while keeping your home safe and sound.

If you’re keen to get planting but not sure where to start, don’t worry! The New Zealand Fire Service has a list of natives and their class of flammability on their website. For more information, visit https://fireandemergency.nz/outdoor-and-rural-fire-safety/protect-your-home-from-outdoor-fires/flammability-of-plant-species/

But please note: any vegetation planted on your property will still have risks. Even trees in the lowest class of flammability can catch fire if a fire is burning hot enough.

End of Winter Garden Tips
For many gardeners and tree-lovers alike, the end of winter is an exciting time to start planning and planting. Here are some friendly tips to help you get your garden ready for the vibrant months ahead:

  • Remove any fallen leaves, branches, and weeds that may have accumulated over winter. This helps prevent pests and diseases from taking hold.
  • Add compost to enrich your soil with nutrients. A layer of mulch will help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Ensure your gardening tools are clean and sharp for efficient use. Well-maintained tools make gardening tasks easier and more enjoyable.
  • Attract birds to your garden by setting up birdhouses and feeders. Birds help control pests and add life to your garden.
  • Leave a few natural areas in your garden to encourage beneficial insects and wildlife.

It’s the perfect time to prepare for a season of growth and renewal!
